North by Northeast has always been South by Southwest’s slightly inferior younger cousin… from Canada. The lineup is never even close to being of the same caliber as SXSW, and the music world — save Canadian media — never seems to make a big fuss about it.
But the organizers of NXNE 2010 have changed this stigma by putting together the strongest lineup of music and film the festival has seen in its entire 16 year-run.
Iggy and the Stooges. The Raveonettes. Surfer Blood. Mudhoney. De La Soul. The Soft Pack. Wavves. And that’s just the free Yonge-Dundas Square shows.
With 650 artists/bands to choose from, not to mention 40 films, including Broken Social Scene’s This Movie is Broken, NXNE 2010 can seem a bit overwhelming at first glance.
So let us give you a hand by breaking down the festival, highlighting the must-see bands and films in each time slot so you can get the most out of your festival wristband. Enjoy!

Thank you to everyone who came out last night for our May installment of My Liner Notes Presents…, where Lowlands played an incredible, stripped-down set of their gritty folk-rock tunes.

We knew things were on the right track when we started getting noise complaints from Joon’s Kitchen downstairs that the band was “stomping too much”.

One of the night’s highlights came from Lowlands’ haunting cover of Timber Timbre’s “Oh Messiah”, which sort of left us all speechless.
