L Magazine’s Northside Festival may have featured a lineup of over 250 bands in Williamsburg and Greenpoint last weekend, but we only had a chance to check out three of those bands due to other commitments, such as The Creators Project and the Voxtrot show.

The Thursday night showcase at The Charleston was currated by Brooklyn band I’m Turning Into.

The lineup included Big Troubles, German Measles, Eleanor, and was supposed to feature My Teenage Stride, but had to cancel last minute due to front man Jebediah Smith’s sudden illness.

This was a huge disappointment considering they were the main reason we went to the show in the first place, but Ridgewood, New Jersey’s Big Troubles saved the day with their dreamy, fast-paced shoegaze sound.

If you’re a fan of The Pains of Being Pure at Heart and The Depreciation Guild, these guys are right up your alley.

Here they are playing the summer anthem “Freudian Slips” as part of the Hotbox at Levi’s/The Fader’s Fort series, in what appears to be a public bathroom.

Let’s hope that no one took a #2 before they started to film this or there really would be some big trouble. (I’m sorry, it’s been a long day and the only quips I’m capable of delivering in this state involve bad puns and toilet humour.)

San Francisco’s Thao Nguyen and Mirah are each gifted singer-songwriters in their own right, but together they form like Voltron to create an indie-folk powerhouse.

Thao’s raspy and often jarring voice combined with Mirah’s delicate vocals creates a beautiful juxtaposition of ying and yang.

After a successful stint at April’s Noise Pop Festival, the two will join forces, along with their respective band members, to create one great big superband this summer.

Torontonians can catch them at the Horseshoe when they play on June 26th.

Here’s an intimate look at the two performing Thao’s “How Dare You”, courtesty of Yours Truly.
